The FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBITCAAA) joined community partners and families to “Light Up Mary Lee’s House,” marking the first-ever holiday lighting celebration at the child-advocacy and support center. What unfolded was an unforgettable night filled with heart, hope, and a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together.

Transforming a Space with Meaning

With the help of the Bright Brothers East Tampa team, Mary Lee’s House was adorned with a stunning holiday light display, turning its main entrance into a radiant symbol of safety and support. The festive glow wasn’t just seasonal décor — it represented the warmth, stability, and joy that Mary Lee’s House provides year-round to children in Hillsborough County who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect.

Event Highlights: Giving, Gathering, and Gratitude

FBITCAAA’s commitment to this special night was substantial. Highlights from the evening included:

• 400 holiday presents collected and donated for the children served by Mary Lee’s House and its partner organizations

• A 2-hour visit from Santa Claus, delighting children and adding festive spirit

• A $2,500 donation check presented by FBITCAAA to support Mary Lee’s House programming

• The complete holiday light installation, generously provided by Bright Brothers East Tampa

Representatives from the center’s core partner organizations attended the celebration, including the Children’s Advocacy Center, USF Child Protection Team, Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County, PEDI Clinic, and the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. TAMPA, FL – The FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBITCAAA), represented by President Jacques Hakim, Board Member Tanya Cielo, and FBI Community Outreach Specialist Betsy Conley, joined students, teachers, and school administrators at a special awards ceremony honoring two talented Blake High School students for their winning design of the FBI National Conference 2025 Challenge Coin.

Under the leadership of Principal Toby Johnson and with the guidance of their teachers, students Anisah Sherrod and Jacqueline Lott created an artistic design that was showcased on the commemorative coin for the FBI National Citizens Academy Alumni Association Conference, hosted in Tampa in June 2025.

President Jacques Hakim emphasized the importance of engaging youth in meaningful community projects:

“We engaged our community and our youth to be an integral part of our mission to support the FBI. By encouraging projects like this, we are showing students that there are positive, creative outlets beyond their phones. We want to inspire them to use their talent and imagination to contribute to something bigger than themselves.”

Jacqueline Lott, one of the student honorees, described the inspiration behind her part of the design:

“My piece featured a pirate ship on the water sailing to an island with a palm tree. The pirate ship represents Tampa’s famous Gasparilla festival, while the palm tree represents Florida. Its lasting presence reflects the strength and resilience of Tampa’s people.”

Betsy Conley, FBI Community Outreach Specialist, highlighted the Bureau’s appreciation for community collaboration:

“The FBI is proud to partner with organizations and schools to strengthen connections with our communities. This project is a perfect example of how creativity and civic engagement can come together to leave a lasting impact.”

Tanya Cielo, Board Member of the FBITCAAA, shared her excitement:

“These students inspire us. Their creativity tells Tampa’s story in a way that connects history, culture, and community. This coin will not just be a symbol of the conference, but also of the bright future our young people represent.”

In attendance Toby Johnson, principal, Tehia Robinson, assistant principal ,Ronald Thompson, assistant principal, Duane Thomas, resource teacher, Kandace Johnson, magnet lead teacher Caitlin Clay, Blake Ceramics and Sculpture teacher Linda Galgani, Blake Photography teacher Molly Dressel, Blake Drawing and Painting teacher Laura Hobby, District Art and Theater Supervisor Karen Wycka, district resource teacher. The ceremony also recognized the contributions of Caitlin Clay, ceramics and sculpture teacher at Blake High School, whose mentorship guided the students’ creativity. Clay often reminds her students to “Seek Discomfort”—a phrase that encourages them to step out of their comfort zones to explore their full potential.

The FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association was proud to showcase the student-designed coin at the FBI National Conference 2025, celebrating both Tampa’s cultural identity and the ingenuity of its youth.

Tampa, FL – Members of the FBITCAAA had the privilege of joining the Suncoast Chapter of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI for a luncheon held in Tampa. Representing the Alumni Association were Jacques Hakim, President of the Tampa Bay Chapter; Dan Sallade, Vice President; and Betsy Conley, Community Outreach Specialist for the Tampa FBI Field Office.

The program featured the Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist, who delivered an engaging presentation on the past year’s active hurricane season and shared projections for the upcoming 2025 storm season. His expertise underscored the challenges Floridians face and the importance of preparedness as storm patterns grow increasingly intense.

The FBITCAAA extends its appreciation to Tom Gates, Chairman; Lisa Kerr, Vice-Chair; Ruta Hance, Treasurer; and Doug DeWolfe, Secretary of the Suncoast Chapter for their warm welcome and hospitality. Their leadership reflects the strong sense of camaraderie and commitment that continues to unite former agents and community partners alike.

The FBI Tampa Field Office hosted a 9/11 Memorial Run to honor the lives lost during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Nearly 100 participants—including FBI employees, members of the FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBITCAAA), and local law enforcement supporters—came together in a powerful show of remembrance, unity, and respect. The event served as a solemn tribute to the victims, first responders, and families forever impacted by that day, while reaffirming a shared commitment to #NeverForget.

The FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBITCAAA) brought holiday spirit to the height of summer with its Christmas in July toy drive, proving that the season of giving knows no calendar. This heartwarming community effort collected toys for hospitalized, abused, and neglected children across Tampa Bay, and thanks to the generosity of our community, we didn’t just meet our goal… we shattered it.

A Record-Breaking Toy Collection

With a goal of 5,000 toys, the FBITCAAA rallied friends, family, and local supporters to fill toy treasure chests used year-round in hospitals, advocacy centers, and child protection services. The result? A mountain of donated toys, surpassing expectations and ensuring thousands of moments of joy for children in need.

Where the Magic Went

The toys were hand-delivered to:

• St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation

• Pasco Kids First

• Advent Health Tampa

• Tampa General Hospital

The Tampa Division of the FBI recently welcomed more than 450 family members to Headquarters for its annual FBI Family Day, a tradition that strengthens bonds between Bureau personnel and their loved ones. This year’s gathering took the form of a festive barbecue, complete with delicious food, laughter, and hands-on activities.

Guests enjoyed mouthwatering barbecue favorites prepared with care, alongside refreshing smoothies courtesy of Planet Smoothie. The event also featured strong community support from Florida Firearms Academy, whose partnership helped make the day a success.

The FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBITCAAA) Board of Directors and members proudly pitched in, helping to coordinate, serve, and ensure every guest felt welcomed.

“It is always an honor to serve alongside such dedicated individuals,” said one Board Member. “Family Day is about showing our gratitude to the families who support FBI personnel every single day.”

On May 20, 2025, federal and local law enforcement agencies responded to a bomb squad incident in a North Fort Myers neighborhood. The operation lasted over 24 hours and included participation from more than 50 officers. The lead federal agency on scene was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with support from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

FBITCAAA CIRT Activation

In support of the extended operation, the Fort Myers Chapter of the FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBITCAAA) activated its Community Incident Response Team (CIRT). The team coordinated and delivered pizza and bottled water directly to the scene. This provision supported personnel from multiple units, including bomb squads, hazardous evidence response teams, and perimeter security.

Scope of Support

The logistical assistance ensured that law enforcement officers had access to basic sustena

nce during the prolonged field operation. The CIRT response focused solely on supporting responders' immediate needs with food and water.

Coordination and Participation

This effort demonstrated effective coordination between community volunteers and law enforcement agencies. While the nature of the threat and operational specifics were not disclosed in full detail, the unified response underscored the collaborative framework in place for addressing public safety threats.
